NC Marriage License Requirements
You give me the license anytime before the ceremony, most often at the rehearsal. With the license in hand, I know that I'm officiating at both a loving ceremony and a legal ceremony. After the ceremony, I sign the license. If we're in NC, then I ask your two witnesses to sign both copies of the license. In VA there are no witnesses required. I mail both copies back to the Register of Deeds.
When you obtain the license, you're provided with information for how to get your own certified copies of your signed and recorded license once married. You can also download the necessary information and form any time at the county's website where you obtained your license.
General information:
- Both Bride and Groom must appear in person, Monday through Friday 8:30 am to 4:00 pm, and provide Social Security numbers verified by their Social Security Cards, W-2 Forms or pay stub.
- Each must also present either:
- If 21 years of age or older: current Driver's License, State ID Card, Passport, or Military ID.
- If under 21: a certified copy of their Birth Certificate. (Some counties require this for all applicants.)
- If 16 or 17 years old, written parential consent and a certified copy of your birth certificate.
- If younger, a court order giving you permission to marry.
- If divorced, the date (month and year) of your divorce. If it was finalized less than 30 days before this application, you'll need an original or certified divorce decree.
- $60.00 cash payment is due at time of application (check county sites for any price changes).
- No physical exam or blood work is required.
- The license is valid for 60 days from the time and date it is issued.
- The completed license must be returned to the office which issued it. (Normally done by mail by the minister).
